Mission Valley Students Compete at the Vera Schultz Mental Math Day

Mission Valley Students Compete at the Vera Schultz Mental Math Day


Ten students from Mission Valley Elementary and Junior High traveled to Pomona on Saturday, October 7th to compete against other schools in the 30th annual Vera Schultz Mental Math Day competition. The competition is split into grade levels and many of the schools are also in the Flinthills League. The preliminary rounds averaged about seven students and all classes had 2 rounds to qualify for the finals round. Mission Valley students ranged from fourth to eighth grade. Of the ten students, four qualified to compete in the finals. Those students were Parker Durkin (4th), Grace Johnston (4th), Colton Appelhanz (5th), and Morgan Campbell (7th). , two students finished in the top three, earning them a medal. Grace Johnston took home a silver medal and Colton Appelhanz brought home a bronze medal. Congratulations to all of the competitors. If you are interested in this area, the mental math club meets Monday mornings from 7:40 to 8:00
