9-6-10 Newsletter Welcome back to another school year. Thus far the school year is off to a great start. The students came back ready to work. We are looking forward to many new challenges. Once again we have a strong dedicated staff that has the best interest of our students at heart. They have been working very hard to prepare for the school year. We ask that parents pick up and drop off students on the north end of the elementary school in the morning and in the afternoon. This is a huge issue for student safety. Last week a student at Gardner Elementary was struck by a vehicle and he lost his life. It is very difficult to see little children when there are so many vehicles in the area. Children don’t often look when crossing the road or street. Please make sure we are following these guidelines. Taking an extra 30 seconds is not too much to ask for the safety of our students. Thank you to the local churches in Harveyville and Eskridge for providing students with school supplies. It is greatly appreciated and starts the school year off well for these students. We also ask that you go over school handbooks and bus rules with your children. These handbooks can answer many questions you might have about procedures and rules. Parents, please make sure that your information is updated for our School Reach contact system. Additionally, if you need a Power School log on, they can be picked up at the school office. We all look forward to working with the parents and community in the upcoming school year. If at any time you have any questions or concerns about school issues, we encourage you to contact the office. We also encourage you to come visit our school. We have many great things going on at school. We are very proud of our school. Senior Reader Are you retired, have a first grader, or have some spare time? Then have I got the deal for you! Mission Valley Elementary School needs volunteers for three hours, once a week, to read with first graders. The only thing you will need to do is come to the school once a week and listen to first graders read a book to you. The children enjoy reading with volunteers every year and remember the volunteers for years to come. It is our goal this year to have one person, every day of the week, for both first grade classes. We would also like to expand our reading program and have the volunteer read with the Kindergarteners also. This is a wonderful opportunity for you to watch the children of our community learn to read. If this sounds like something you would be interested in doing or know someone who would please contact Shelley Willsey at 256-6642. Kindergarten NewsMiss Everett Kindergarten is off to a great start! We have a smaller class with year, with only 13 students. I think this class will be a lot of fun. The kindergarteners have been getting to know one another and making friends. We have also been busy learning the rules and routines of our classroom and school. I asked the kindergarteners what their favorite thing about school is. Here are their answers: Alena – I like playing. Trey – I like recess and P.E. Cord – I like jogging in the gym. Lea – I like lunchtime and playing and my teacher. Tucker – I like gym. Norah – I like recess. Corbett – I like P.E. Lorrie – I loved when we used markers. Ike – I like playing. Aidan – I love lunch and looking at crocodile books. Emma – I like eating in the lunchroom. Doug – I like to jog in P.E. Mrs. Dunford’s Early Childhood ClassThe Early Childhood classroom is off to a great start this year. Some of the kids are returning students from last year. It has been great to see their familiar faces. Many of the students are new to the class this year. We are all having a good time getting to know everyone. The students have been exploring the classroom and what it has to offer. Our classroom is divided into centers for students to investigate during our Choice Play time. . . we have Library, Art, Sensory Table, Kitchen, Puzzles and Toy sections. Since it is so early in the school year, I asked each student “What’s your favorite thing about school?” Here are their responses: Carlie ~ playing in the kitchen Alli ~ playing dress up Luke ~ playing on the slide Ja’Vae ~ playing with the kitchen stuff Jarrek ~ coloring Colton ~ playing with blocks Kason ~ playing on the playground Gabriel ~ playing toys Nick ~ playing games Porter ~ painting Ashton ~ playing with the phones Clara ~ playing kitchen with Ashton Joby ~ playing outside Brenden ~ eating snack Krista ~ listening to music Dakota ~ recess Snapper ~ playing play dough Gabe ~ eating Josie ~ playing with babies Brody ~ reading books Mariah ~ playing in the kitchen James ~ playing outside Jena ~ eating snack Kenady ~ coloring Johnavin ~ playing outside Cole ~ playing toys
