We hope that everyone had a great Thanksgiving and are preparing for Christmas, we sure are at Mission Valley! We love the Christmas season and what it means, as a season of giving. We want to share that love of giving with the students. After discussing different ways we can give back, the Topeka Rescue Mission continued to jump out as a place that could benefit from our generosity. We have spoken to the director of the Topeka Rescue Mission, Barry Feaker, who explained that they have a huge need of toys (infants on up) for Christmas presents this Christmas season. We would like to hold a toy drive in support of the Rescue Mission here at Mission Valley. If you can help us show our students what it is like to give back, we would appreciate it. Please have your child bring any new toy(s) to donate, to their teacher, by Friday, December 13th. We will get the toys dropped off at the Rescue Mission in time for those in need to enjoy a great Christmas! If you are wondering about other ways you can help, please go to trmonline.org. If you have any questions regarding our exciting project, please contact Amy Johnston (ajohnston@mv330.org) or Annie Thomas (athomas@mv330.org ). Thank you in advance for helping us encourage giving back during this Christmas season!!

This week is School Bus Safety week. And we would like to thank all of our transportation employees and Bus Drivers for keeping our students safe. A special thank you to Bill Logan for keeping our buses in tip top shape throughout the school year. School bus transportation plays a critical role in the education of our nation's students, and is the direct link between a neighborhood and the classroom. More than 25 million children ride the yellow bus every school day, and National School Bus Safety Week serves as a reminder for students, parents, teachers, and the community to keep school bus safety in the forefront.

The elementary celebrated their summer reading program this afternoon with the students who read over 2,700 minutes. Each student received a slushy, prizes and water bottles. The research on children reading includes improving a child's vocabulary and language skills, it develops their imagination, readers achieve better in school, it exercises their brains, improves concentration and helps them to become better readers. We are so proud of our young readers and parents who supported our summer reading goal.

May 3, 2019 Parent(s)/Guardian(s): Thank you for your attendance this past Wednesday for the 4th – 6th Grade Spring Concert. Due to unforeseen circumstances, the 5th Grade Band was not able to perform as previously scheduled. I know our students, as well as Mr. Rogers, have worked very hard throughout the year and we want to make sure they have an opportunity to perform their portion of the concert. After meeting with the students on Thursday and talking with Mr. Rogers, we have worked together to find a solution so our students can still have their performance. On Wednesday, May 8th, our 5th Grade Band will perform a small concert at 3:00 in the main gym. | know that some may wish to attend, but due to work or prior commitments you might not be able to. With that said, I would still like to extend this invitation to anyone that may be able to come and watch our students perform. I look forward to seeing them perform next Wednesday, and thank you again for all your support throughout the year and through this change. Sincerely, Brett Fenton

Please read this wonderful letter from a mom of a child with Autism. Attached is an order form if you would like an Autism Awareness Shirt. "Hey Mission Valley Vikings! Many of you know my son Carter. He is usually bouncing off the walls or observing the way things fall. His latest thing is using a chain or a string of beads and swirling it like a lasso. We have a real cowboy in our family! And how can you forget that smile?! Carter was diagnosed with Autism at the age of 2. He wasn't interested in playing. His favorite past time was poking shoe laces down into a heat vent. Anyone who knows me knows I could go on and on so I will try my best here. I have been so amazed and proud of Carter's classmates and this school as a whole. I believe understanding is the key to acceptance. It's understanding why Carter gets upset when there's too much noise. That it may not be a tantrum but Carter just having a hard time. Also, just because Carter is non-verbal doesn't mean that he doesn't have anything to say. Carter uses an IPad to communicate. Many times, I have heard about a friend taking Carter's hand or asking him if he needs his talk Ipad. My wish is that every child understands just because Autism may make you think and play differently doesn't mean that you can't be friends. So, with that being said, April is Autism Acceptance Month. We will be selling shirts to help raise awareness and acceptance. All proceeds will be staying within the Mission Valley School. With Mrs. Meek's help, I would like to purchase a few framed Autism Acceptance posters to place around our halls in hopes to help educate parents, students, and visitors. This is one step of spreading awareness and acceptance. "Look beyond Autism and see someone special" Thank you for your support! Ronie Willard

Viking Family: With the recent tragic events across the country involving students being struck by vehicles while loading onto a bus it is important for us to remember safety rules regarding school buses. More school aged pedestrians have died during the hour before and after school than any other time of day, according to NHTSA. And, although drivers are required by law to stop for a school bus when it's loading or unloading passengers, they often don't. Kansas Law KSA 8-1556 requires all motorists to stop when approaching or overtaking a stopped school bus displaying its flashing red lights and stop arm. Motorists are to remain stopped until the bus is no longer displaying is flashing red lights and stop arm. Violation of this law not only endangers children but is punishable by a fine and court costs in excess of $420. Tips for a Safe Ride for Students School buses are the safest way for students to travel, but children also need to do their part to stay alert and aware of their surroundings to prevent injury. NSC urges parents to teach their children the following safety rules for getting on and off the bus, and for exercising good behavior while riding. Getting on the Bus: ● When waiting for the bus, stay away from traffic and avoid roughhousing or other behavior that can lead to carelessness ● Do not stray onto the street, alleys or private property ● Line up away from the street or road as the bus approaches ● Wait until the bus has stopped and the door opens before approaching the bus ● Use the handrail when boarding Behavior on the Bus: ● Don't speak loudly or make loud noises that could distract the driver ● Stay in your seat ● Don't put your head, arms or hands out the window ● Keep aisles clear of books and bags ● Get your belongings together before reaching your stop ● Wait for the bus to stop completely before getting up from your seat Getting Off the Bus: ● Use the handrail when exiting ● If you have to cross in front of the bus, first walk at least 10 feet ahead until you can see the driver ● Make sure the driver can see you ● Wait for a signal from the driver before crossing ● When the driver signals, look left, right, then left again. Walk across the road and keep an eye out for sudden traffic changes ● If your vision is blocked, move to an area where you can see other drivers and they can see you ● Do not cross the center line of the road until the driver signals it is safe ● Stay away from the rear wheels of the bus at all times Thank you!

Governor Jeff Colyer has proclaimed Wednesday, October 24, 2018, as School Bus Drivers’ Appreciation Day. https://www.ksde.org/Portals/0/School%20Bus/KSPTA/Governor%20Proclamation%202018.pdf These men and women dedicate their time and talent to make sure our students are safely transported to and from school and activities. National School Bus Safety Week is October 22-26, 2018. This is the perfect time to contact local members of the media and encourage them to include a story on bus safety – including the importance of obeying the law regarding stopped school buses. With a nationwide shortage of bus drivers, you also may want to ask people to consider applying to become a school bus driver. Kansas bus drivers transport more than 225,000 children to and from schools across Kansas every school day. These drivers are extremely valuable assets and are unsung heroes in communities across the state.
