2022 FHL Art Show Results
On Monday, April 4 Mission Valley High School art students hosted the Flint Hills League Art Show. Retired Blue Valley sculpture teacher John Butcher along with Clemson graduate and MV alum Autumn Wines judged the projects for the league schools. Area teachers and students came to present work, take part in workshops to explore new media and celebrate the visual arts through this annual competition.
Mission Valley students earned ten medals and many ribbons for honorable mention in multiple categories. Freshman Jena Grame took home silver for her soft pastel dog drawing “The Light in the Darkness'' and Senior Kennedy Brooks earned gold for her oil pastel portrait “Toby on the Train.” Sophomore Hope Blake received silver for the perspective drawing in colored pencil titled “sitting in simple solitude.”
JuniorMick Quinnhad Honorable Mention for his Dr. Pepper in the Ink category. Freshman Hunter Tenbrink earned silver for Acrylic Painting with his portrait “Crazy Man.” Seniors Alexa McGann and Gabriel Goldsmith and Junior Joshua Robinson had Honorable Mention for their portraits in Acrylic as well. Senior Carley Wagner earned gold for her watercolor painting “Dragonfly.” Kennedy Brooks earned her second gold in Mixed Media titled “Flowering Yokes.”
Sophomore Starla Bennet had Honorable Mention for Clay Handbuilt coil pot. In Ceramic Sculpture, Junior Mick Quinn had Honorable Mention for his “Chinese Dragon” clay whistle and Senior Carly Wagner for her name design Graffiti Slab. JuniorMick Quinn and Freshman Luke Dudley took Gold for their cardboard Sculpture titled “Monkey” while Freshman Sam Logan-Hernandez had two Honorable Mentions for his “Zombie” paper mache mask and “Rust” letter sculpture. Sophomore Nolan Handley and Freshman Kaden Brobst had Honorable Mention for their “Lighthouse” cardboard sculpture.
In Modified Curriculum Sophomore Scott Bayless took Gold with his colored pencil drawing “Boss’s Office” and Senior Talia Lira earned Bronze for her Printmaking. Mission Valley were thrilled that the “Monkey” cardboard sculpture by Mick Quinn and Luke Dudley earned Best of Show 3D. What a great representation of our talented and hard working artists!

Just a reminder that tomorrow night is the MV Spring Carnival from 5-8 pm in the HS Commons. Proceeds support our MV PTO. There will be games, a silent auction, concessions and a spring cleaning of MV Prints. It should be a fun night full of activities and something for everyone! Yesterday, the 7-12 students had a presentation from a Kansas non-profit called "Jana's Campaign." This non-profit's mission is about EDUCATION and PREVENTION against gender and relationship violence. The students were given specific definitions of healthy and unhealthy relationships and how to identify both. Mission Valley FCCLA had a fabulous showing at State Leadership Conference!
Ava was inducted as a new Peer Education member.
Clara was installed as the new District D president.
Kenady, Athena & Mrs. Bergin served as STAR Event volunteers.
Our chapter received recognition for being active, having a large membership increase, and having a high percentage of members participating in STAR Events, and recruitment activities during rush week.
Karlyn won four KS FCCLA scholarships, was awarded the District D Member of the Year Award, and presented the national report.
The Gustin Family was honored as the KS FCCLA Family of the Year.
Our LEO (Leadership Educational Opportunity) participants did well on their projects! Clara earned red (high honor) for her board, Kenady and Athena earned red/white (honor) on each of their two boards!
And last, but not least…all five of our STAR Event participants qualified for Nationals and will be San Diego bound this summer! Congratulations Clara, Ava, Kailey, Emma, & Lucy!

The MV Baseball & Softball teams shut out county rival, Wabaunsee, in game #1. BSB wins 4-0 and SB wins, 5-0. Great job Vikings!

Friday April 8th is our School and Community Service/Clean-Up Day as well as FFA Highway Clean-Up! Also, from 5pm-8pm we will be hosting our MVHS Carnival. GO VIKINGS!


Good Luck to the HS Track & Field teams today as they compete in the Osage City Inv., with field events beginning at 3:30.

Today the HS Varsity Baseball & Softball teams will be at Alma-Wabaunsee, with BSB beginning @ 4:30 and SB beginning @ 5:00 (30 min. later due to State FCCLA). Good Luck Vikings!

Our MV FFA Horticulture class will host a Plant Sale on Friday, April 29th from 3:30-6:00 pm and on Saturday from 8:00-noon. All proceeds go back into our Greenhouse/Horticulture class for future plant sales and learning opportunities. We hope you will add this to your schedule and plan to attend. Everyone is welcome!


Here are a few updates with JV Baseball & JV Softball now that schools know how many kids they have out. We also have a couple of postponements due to weather. Please make this change on your calendars/schedules:
- JV BSB @ Eskridge TODAY @ 3:30; NO JV SB TODAY (Wab. had to cancel as most of their team is @ State FCCLA).
- JV SB from 3-25 has been moved to 4-11; JV BSB hosts Osage City on 4-11.
- JV SB will host Burlingame on 4-12;
- Var. SB on 4-21 will be AT Burlingame, not MV
- JV SB @ Burlingame Quad. on Sat. 4-30 @ 9:30 am
We are still trying to reschedule the Wabaunsee JV SB game.

What a great start to State Leadership Conference! Karlyn gave her farewell as part of the state officer team for two years and national officer team for one. Ava was introduced as a new Peer Education member. Our members took part in the FCCLA Foundation Memory Walk and each dedicated a luminary bag to former Mission Valley adviser, Rose Niland. ❤️.
